MTV-Greg Knapp
The blogging for this week was one of my favorites. The video for the first MTV show was very interesting. While watching the two videos they showed, I couldn’t help but notice how far music videos have come. The old music videos were very simplistic and showed very little special effects. It made me realize just how far music videos have come. I also noticed the hosts for the show mention that this was the first show that was going to play music videos 24/7. With changing times, MTV now has many other shows along with the video countdown. With all this video music talk, I was waiting for something to talk about looks interfering with music. The article, As MTV Turns Ten, Pop Goes The World, talked about this. They talked about looks and music videos compared to the sound of the music. Personally, I don’t care how amazing a music video is, if I absolutely hate the song. People were complaining about the looks of people getting in the way of the actual sound of the music. I think that the music video is just an add on to the song, not what you should associate the song with. The statement, “Anyone who took MTV literally would be nearly as warped as someone who believed soap operas were documentaries”, was very funny to me because it was basically saying that people are over reacting about the music videos. I believe that people should appreciate the videos more than just criticize them.

Yes - the looks/music dynamic has been discussed to death since the onset of MTV. The best videos really do use the visual modality to add, rather than subtract, from a song's impact.
ReplyDeleteAlso - you can critically analzye something AND appreciate it. Criticism isn't just negative (though it often is).
